Backdrop One Rainy Day by 7 Photographers

Backdrop is a playful series of pictures made on a rainy day by 7 photographers working in a frenzied collaboration. With a large black portable backdrop, a camera, and a powerful flash, we set out to photograph passers-by around Queens Square Park and Wapping Wharf, Bristol. Transformed by our impromptu stage set, the people we photographed became unlikely actors; shoppers rushing home from town; office and construction workers on lunch; walkers and their dogs; and tourists sightseeing in spite of the weather; all transformed in the spotlight. The result is a curious and playful set of images.

In the wake of the recent anti-immigration riots across Britain, the profits from this publication go to supporting Action Asylum, in solidarity with refugees and asylum seekers. Action Asylum connects people seeking sanctuary in Britain with local communities, offering opportunities to connect through shared projects. Their approach is hopeful and constructive, and essential to addressing the polarisation we recently saw flair up on streets across the UK. Action Asylum is also a lifeline to asylum seekers, who are legally prohibited from working, but given an allowance of just £7 a day to live on, often living this way for years while waiting for a decision about their refugee status.

For each £8 publication sold, £5 goes directly to Action Asylum.
